About John

Born in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, John grew up on a farm in Paul, Idaho. He graduated from both Ricks College and BYU, serving as sports editor at both schools, and served a mission to Florida for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked at newspapers in Cedar City, St. George, Provo, and Santa Clarita (California) before returning to Utah. He then worked in the office at C.R. England for more than two decades. He quickly became involved in Salt Lake City's chess circles upon his retirement, and has since added writing poetry as a hobby.

Campaign Information

John is concerned about:

  • The Environment: More needs to be done to find sustainable solutions that address the long-term health of our natural environment.
  • Immigration: More needs to be done to give those legitimately escaping oppression a legal, fair and timely process to claim asylum, while screening out those who might pose a threat to the safety of our communities and nation.
  • National Politics: Too many candidates have extreme agendas, including those that incorporate the beliefs of such groups as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
  • National debt, our economy, our education system, and the values (and lack of values) reflected in American society.

John supports a balanced approach in foreign interventions focused on stopping aggression and protecting the innocent.

He looks forward to helping Utah in its important role in these issues.

The United Utah Party
Stands for the 5 E’s

Economy: We support the free market system as the engine for economic growth. Public policy must promote economic opportunity for all, regardless of social and economic class, including the poor and needy.

Education: We support robust and accountable funding for public education in order to promote economic growth and engaged citizenship by preparing students for a changing world.

Environment: We advocate for stewardship for Utah’s natural resources over the long term, especially clean air and responsible water use.

Equality: We support laws that provide protection against discrimination based on race, religion, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Every individual is of inherent worth, has a right to be respected, and deserves to fully participate in our shared political and economic life.

Ethical Government: We believe that elected officials are responsible to the people, and not the demands of political parties, and must always act with integrity and in accordance with their oaths of office. We want to increase transparency, promote accountability, and expand voter access.
